Joss stamped it with his seal of official canon. Which people can ignore if they like, of course. (shrug)
While I have a few quibbles with AtF, I find it much more believable as a continuation of AtS than I find S8 as a continuation of BtVS, and I find the emotional lives of the characters much more accessible.
