Thanks! Max is great, isn't he? It's funny given how much I like Giles how much I have to be prodded into thinking about him in these early episodes. I think it always bothered me that the start a story line about Ripper and then never have it go anywhere. But that doesn't mean that Giles' story isn't important as parallel/commentary to Buffy's. It was only in my last rewatch that I realized that Dark Age is all about Buffy, not all about Giles -- and that helps me make more sense of his role in the show. (Along with the obvious role of gradually becoming a real father figure for Buffy -- and watching Giles deal with having paternal affection for a girl he knows is going to die).
