I like your point on the vicarious nature of Willow's romantic life. I think it's the next episode where she'll decline trying to be more aggressive with Xander, saying "that way lies madness, and sweaty palms." Sweaty palms: how cutely Willow. But "that way lies madness" invokes Dark Willow's response to Tara's death.
