Spike were the vampire to get there first, before Angel set all the rules for how Buffy viewed a vampire straddling good and evil.
It's kind of hard to imagine because the rules for the two are just so different. The difference being that in Spike's case it was the demon who sought the soul. Yeah, the demon may chaffe against it sometimes, but it was a willing, even desired thing. There may be internal squabbles but there's no internal war. Angel was cursed. The soul was not wanted. The soul is never wanted. Each and every time it is imposed on the demon against it's will and internally it rages. Liam's instincts are not always to be trust. The demon is mad as hell and wants to be freed. And the soul is the curse that binds it together with chains of guilt and disgust.
The internal struggles are different for Spike and Angel. I don't think Spike's issues come from the demon. Spike's self-doubt and self-loathing come from William. Angel's doubt comes from his internal war between his demons and the curse of guilt imposed on them.
