I agree with You on the darkness hinted at - but as i said, i cut Xander some slack due to his personal situation. (And also, because ultimately, he is kind of right. On BtVS - i'm leaving out AtS here - a lot of bad stuff could have been prevented if Angelus was dead.)
Also, i don't think it is only wrong reasons: Xander never fantasizes on Angel having an "accident" before knowing he's a vampire. He's jealous and petty but well, i'm not going to hang him for that (16 years old, no respect before Buffy, ectpp.). When he learns that Angel is a vampire, he wants him dead because he is a vampire. It also removes the competition (in his deluded mind), and that's a pretty big bonus for Xander. So, yes, there is darkness shown here. But i think it is unfair to Xander for painting him as just a jealous jerk. And, as i said - he's so young. He has poor judgement (as evident in his idea that once the competition is removed, Buffy would fall for him), but who hasn't at the age of 16? (Btw. this is also one of the reasons why i cut Buffy a lot of slack for some of her more questionable behaviour: she's a teenage girl in a world of darkness!)
Later on, we see a lot of questionable behaviour from Xander, but he only ever acts once on his jealousy: When trying to kill a defenseless Spike with an axe.
So yes, there is some darkness there, but it is the later seasons when we see that in full swing (i mostly see it in his relationship with Anja/Buffy - the tidbit about Spike above was just an illustration), and it is the later seasons when i hold him more responsible for it (cause he's older then, too).
